Spring Fishing Fun
Its that time of year. The snow is melting and the ice is disappearing on the larger bodies of water here in Utah and you know what that means...fish are hungry! The spring time is my favorite time of the year. Its that time when I can wipe the dust off of my fly pole and clean up my waders so I can get back out on the waters to catch some amazing fish.
This last weekend I traveled to Kolob Reservoir in Southern Utah to where all of the big fish come out to play. I was joined by my 4 college roommates as we prepared for an eventful day of fishing. The fun thing about Kolob this time of year is only artificial flies are allowed as bait for fishing so we are usually the only ones out on the lake because fly fishing is usually not as popular as other fishing techniques.
As we arrived at the lake, we were quite disappointed because of the low water level. We hadn't heard of the repairs that the lake was undergoing before the winter hit so we were pretty upset when we saw that it was half way full but we decided to fish it anyways and make it a fun experience anyways.
We pulled up to a location that we usually fish at when the water levels are high and put on our waders and walked down into the muddy lake shore and headed to the only visible body of water. Our hopes were pretty low because we weren't sure how the fish population did with all of the repairs being done to the lake.
I tied up my secret fly that usually kills it at Kolob and I began to whip my pole back and forth trying to mimic that look of a real fly. I tossed my line out to the water just hoping for the best. Just a few seconds went by before, BOOM, my first fish was already on the line! I reeled that bad boy in as quick as I could because of the excitement/shock that I was in. There it was, the largest fish that I had ever caught to date at that reservoir. My friends were all in shock as well as they had no hope in the area we were fishing. Once they saw me reel that in, they were instantly whipping their lines out in the water as well.
It wasn't 30 minutes in and we had caught over 20 fish total. We were absolutely killing it! It was the most fun we had experienced fishing in awhile. Cast after cast, we were bringing in some fish and they weren't just any fish, they were all big, heavy, and fighting fish.
We spent a few hours fishing on the lake and decided it was probably time to go home even though we didn't want to leave. Our total count on fish reeled in was 63! This was the craziest roller coaster ride of a fishing trip I have ever experienced. It just shows that if something is going out the way you planned, keep you head up because there is always good things that will come in the future.
